Samuel Whitbread Academy

January Excursions

January has been a busy month across the academy; read below to see what the students have been up to.

University of Bedfordshire Library Visit

On Monday, January 13th, fourteen Year 12 students attended the University of Bedfordshire to utilise the library and its facilities for research on their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This is one of the various Sixth Form Enrichment Options available to students at Samuel Whitbread Academy. The EPQ is worth half an A Level and provides an excellent opportunity to develop independent study and organisational skills that are valued by universities and employers. A special thank you to the library staff on the Bedford campus for their support.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour

On Thursday, January 16th, our Year 10 and 11 Film & Media students had a fantastic day at Warner Bros. Studio Tour: The Making of Harry Potter! They engaged in a hands-on lesson that focused on cinematography, explored iconic props—including Hagrid's giant trousers, visited Gringotts Bank, and wandered through the mystical Forbidden Forest. This immersive experience enhanced their understanding of various job roles and opportunities in the film industry.

Cambridge University

Also on Thursday, January 16th, our A-level Physics students experienced an exciting day at Cambridge University, attending a captivating lecture titled “Building the Earth.” They explored the intricate process of planet formation around stars, leaving them inspired and eager to deepen their understanding of the cosmos. Meanwhile, our Mathematics students participated in a one-day conference at Cambridge University that focused on tackling university entrance maths questions. This event provided them with a valuable opportunity to enhance their understanding and confidence in problem-solving. Notably, our students actively demonstrated and shared their strategies and insights with teachers and peers.

Luton Hoo Hotel

On Monday, January 20th, as part of their Food Safety examined unit, our Level 3 Food and Nutrition students visited Luton Hoo Hotel. They received an extensive tour of the kitchens and food storage areas, which offered valuable insights into the importance of food safety in a commercial environment. They were fortunate to have the executive head chef, Noel Busby, guide them through the facility and deliver an informative talk on food safety. The students acquired significant knowledge from this experience, gaining a real-world perspective on the importance of hygiene in food preparation. Thank you to Luton Hoo Hotel for an amazing day! It was particularly interesting to learn about the historical connection, as Mr. Samuel Whitbread opened Luton Hoo Hotel in 2008.
