A Message from Principal, Mr Martin
As we approach the Easter break, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a truly fantastic half-term here at Samuel Whitbread Academy. We have seen many incredible achievements across the school, alongside a wide range of enriching events and activities.
One of the most unique and memorable moments this term was the arrival of four new additions to our academy—not students, but ducklings! As part of a dedicated science project organised by Mr Tate, our science lab became a temporary home for these hatchlings, providing an enriching learning experience for both staff and students of all ages. We are delighted to share that they have now been rehomed with our very own Ms Barford, where they will continue to be well cared for. You can read more about their journey below.
Year 12 geographers had an unforgettable experience on their recent residential trip to Dorset, where they explored the Jurassic Coast. This hands-on fieldwork opportunity allowed them to develop their data collection techniques, including beach profiling and soil pH testing, while refining their investigative skills in a real-world setting.
On 25th March, we observed the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Some of our students had the honour of attending a profoundly moving event hosted by Sharon De Leonardis and SpectaculArts, where they participated in poetry readings and a candle-lighting ceremony. It was a powerful and thought-provoking experience, reminding us of the importance of reflection and education in shaping a more empathetic and tolerant future.
In the arts, our Year 11 students took to the stage for their Drama Performance Evening—an invaluable opportunity to refine their skills ahead of their GCSE practical exams. Another highlight was the Spring Concert, which showcased the extraordinary musical talent at Samuel Whitbread in what was one of the most impressive performance evenings ever seen at SWA. We now look forward to the upcoming Year 13 Drama Performance Evening and Dance Showcase, wishing all involved the very best of luck.
In just ten days, the students of Sam Whit achieved one of the most outstanding sets of results in SWA’s history. The streak of success began with the U18 boys securing a dominant 7-1 victory over Cheadle Hulme High School, earning their place in the Football National Final for the third time. Then, on Monday, the U14 girls triumphed in the Sisters in Sport Netball National Bowl, while the U16 girls claimed victory in the Rosslyn Park 7s Bowl. The winning momentum continued on Thursday as the U16 girls advanced to the County Cup final in football, followed by the U18 girls reaching the Rosslyn Park 7s Cup final on Friday.
Finally, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to our students, staff, and families for their dedication and enthusiasm this term. We also bid a fond farewell and best wishes to Mrs Linehan as she embarks on her new role as Principal at Pix Brook Academy.
Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable Easter break.
