A Message from Principal, Mr Martin
Winter has definitely arrived, as on Monday we had a splattering of snow on the school grounds. The first sign of snow was the perfect excuse to accelerate our Christmas celebrations: additional decorations and lights were added to the Christmas tree in reception, and on the last day of term, Friday 17th December, it will be a Christmas themed non-uniform day.
This week the government has announced some of the COVID-19 measures are being reintroduced in schools, this is unfortunate but understandable considering the news regarding the new variant. Please can you ensure your child has a face covering with them when they leave for school, as we are still having to distribute several boxes worth at the school gate each morning. Can I remind parents that face coverings need to be worn on all school buses.
Last week we had an inspector from the Inclusion Quality Mark spend two days in the school looking at equality, diversity, SEND provision and learning support, as well as talking to staff, students and parents. I’m pleased to announce that we have retained the quality mark for another three years and the inspector even went as far as to recommend that we apply to become a centre of excellence, particularly for the work of our provision unit. This is worthy recognition for all the team’s hard work and dedication and I know Mr Rowell, Miss Yadav and Mrs Swift are incredibly proud of their teams.
The final of the international debate took place last week with the SWA debating team up against Etonbury, as well as schools in Scotland and Zimbabwe. It was a fantastic event and saw Peterhouse School (Zimbabwe) awarded the first ever Debating Cup by FJSS. The whole event took an enormous amount of organisation and I would especially like to thank Dr Haynes for all her work in arranging the different debates, and for prepping our team for the final. To read more about the event, please see below.
We have had a number of sporting highlights recently with a comprehensive performance by all four boys’ rugby teams against Perse school in Cambridge last Saturday. Both girls and boys football teams are through to the third round of national cups. For more information about the games in detail, please see below in our sports news section.
The Christmas pantomime is nearly here (oh no it’s not) and the rehearsals are going incredibly well. Please make sure you purchase your tickets sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment. The link to purchase tickets can be found below.
Lastly, we are taking part in The Rotary Club rotary shoebox appeal again this year, so if you have any donations then please can students drop them at reception or give them to their tutors by 10th December.

Messages From Heads of Year
|
|
Time has flown by this term and September feels like a long time ago. Year 9 have very nearly completed their first full term as Samuel Whitbread students! To celebrate, we are inviting every Year 9 student to take part in our Whitbread Winter Challenge - a fantastic way to have fun this December and compete for a chance to win some prizes. Students can access the full challenge via their SatchelOne account. Good luck, Year 9!
Year 10 students’ first progress report of the academic year will be sent out next Thursday (9th December). This is an excellent opportunity for constructive conversations with your children about their progress in their GCSE subjects. Tutors will be having individual discussions with students about their reports and what they can do to both improve their overall attitude to learning score, and their working and predicted grades. If you have any questions or concerns about your child following reports, please contact their form tutor in the first instance.
It has been fantastic to see some of our Year 10s diving into extra-curricular activities including the pantomime, Christmas Concert and sports teams – a wider involvement in school life definitely helps to create a positive environment and attitude across school.
It was fantastic to see our Year 10 football and rugby boys teams this afternoon in action on the field, the quality of sport on display was excellent, and really demonstrated our school values of teamwork and determination. Special mentions for Callum Carolan with two incredible saves in goal for the football team in their National Cup match, and some blistering runs by Danny Scorah in the rugby, in his last match for Whitbread before he moves away from the area
As we draw towards the end of the first mock season of Year 11, we would just like to take the opportunity to commend the Year 11 students on their impeccable behaviour and maturity when approaching the mock examinations. We hope that the students have had the opportunity to learn what works for them in terms of revision and preparation for their exams and that they can utilise this going forward. Well done and keep up the great work.
Our students have now received their first report, and we have been really pleased with the start Year 12 has made to their studies. We had 111 students receive an ‘excellent’ attitude to learning for at least two of their subjects, which is impressive. Students will now be working in form time to construct targets for each subject that will help them improve further. We want our Year 12s to understand the emphasis on independent learning, and the need to take ownership of their own progress. We hope these activities will help them become even better learners.
The Youth Ambassador Programme opportunity for students still has places left. I cannot stress how useful and rewarding this will be for students. It is a unique and exciting programme that will see students learning more about the world around them through workshops. But also being shown how to deliver workshops to younger students for an event later in the school year. This will set students apart when it comes to applications for university, apprenticeships or jobs; in an ever increasing competitive market. Although the deadline for declaring their interest has gone, if any more students are still interested they should let myself, their tutor or Dr Haynes know.
At the time of writing this message our Year 13 students are in the middle of their IPE (Internal Progression Exams). These will form an important part of their next predict grades as we move into the last two terms of their time at SWA. We have sent over 50 UCAS applications, and many of our students have taken advantage of the independent careers adviser on site during the last few weeks. If they are unsure about next steps or need some advice on how to apply for apprenticeships please do encourage them to talk through options with their form tutor, and make use of our careers staff. Careers appointments can be booked via email: jmcmillan@bestacademies.org.uk.
If they are planning on going to university they must finish their application soon – and book a final check and send appointment through emailing sbutler@bestacademies.org.uk. It is essential that they communicate well with their form tutor, who writes their tutor reference.
In the last week of term we will be celebrating their academic achievements in our Christmas achievement assembly. I would also like to celebrate out of school achievements such as passing driving tests, sporting excellence and volunteering – please do let their form tutor or myself know so we can include them in our praise shoad@bestacademies.org.uk

MODERN LANGUAGE
A “promising” student linguist who really impressed us this year
Y9 French: Alfie Dickman has been incredibly impressive with his hard work and determination in class. Alfie is always first to try new and challenging concepts, and has worked incredibly hard to improve and progress in French this year. He approaches each lesson with a joyful enthusiasm and continues to grow in his abilities. Well done Alfie and hopefully see you at GCSE!
Y10 Spanish: Nadia Ahmad is an extremely bright, promising linguist. She is a very conscientious learner who is always challenging herself to excel in Spanish making sure the work she produces is of the highest quality possible. She is very inquisitive and asks all the right questions to push herself to the next level. Well done, Nadia!
A “hardworking” linguist
Y11 Spanish: Olivia Chilvers has become one of our most hard-working students in GCSE Spanish. She started Y11 with a fresh mind set and a real determination to do well. She is dedicated to pushing herself and it is really paying off which is evident in her consistent 100% vocabulary scores! Keep up the great work Olivia!
Y11 French: Layla Beaton has worked incredibly hard throughout her time studying French. She has made a huge amount of progress, and isn’t afraid to tackle some really challenging areas of the course, in order to stretch and challenge herself. Her attitude to learning is fantastic, and she has excelled in many areas of the GCSE course. A special mention should be given to her cheerful and optimistic attitude. She is also quick to help others in class. Well done Layla, you will go on to achieve great things in French.

RUGBY 1ST XV
SWA’s 1st XV rugby team has had a mixed bag of results recently. With us narrowly losing to Cardinal Newman on Wednesday, the game at Perse on Saturday was a great opportunity to right a few wrongs. Prior to the game, the team spoke about that when confidence is low, you have to work even harder than usual to gain small successes and the boys did just that. In some extremely challenging conditions, it was difficult to win the territorial battle and difficult to keep the ball for any sustained period of time, however with some relentless defence and some outstanding pieces of skill, we were able to win 18-11. There were some excellent performances from Luke Howells, Ben Radnor and John Richardson but Man of the Match was given to our 1st XV captain Ben Yates. Hopefully, we can now take some confidence from this positive result and move forward.

RUGBY U16
Following an amazing result two Saturdays prior, the U16 rugby team played against the very talented Perse School, Cambridge. Despite losing captain Callum Lodder to concussion we had Calib Anim make a return to the pitch. Calib had scored the first try of the match and finished off a team move with a strong pick and go close to the line, converted by Louis Haley. SWA went into half time with a 7-5 lead. However, in the second half the pressure was on, as Perse School were one point ahead of us. This is where Man of the Match, Reon Gilbert, crashed over to send the boys into celebrations with 5 minutes to play. Despite some nerves, SWA held on to win 14-8. A fantastic set of fixtures before Christmas with some big ones to come in the New Year. Well played.

Well done to all the staff who grew out their facial hair for the whole month of November. All the money they’ve raised went towards the charity Movember. An organisation that raises awareness for men’s health, both physical and mental. You can still donate if you didn’t have the chance to in November.
