A Message from Principal, Mr Martin
The end of term has arrived and what an incredibly eventful term it has been!
Last week we held our Christmas pantomime, Rapunzel: a fantastic evening's entertainment involving students from Samuel Whitbread and our feeder Lower and Middle Schools. It was great to see students on stage performing to an audience once again, after all the disruption during lockdowns and last year’s cancellation. I would like to thank Mrs Blake, Mrs Redcliff, Mrs Major, Mrs Jones, Mrs Swift, Dr Hood, Mrs Meadows, Mr Rowell and Mr Whittle for the amazing set, choreography, acting, technical support, music and direction. I know how much our students appreciate all the time, energy and limitless enthusiasm from our staff, especially considering how jam packed it is this time of year.
On Tuesday, we had our annual Christmas Concert, which was another amazing evening of talent including performances on strings, brass, percussion, by our choirs and singers. It concluded with two songs from our Retro Band. It was a true celebration of the Arts with a number of stand-out performances, including two incredibly difficult pieces from the musical ‘Hamilton’. Once again, I would like to thank the music department and all our peripatetic teachers for their hard work and dedication.
This week we have had our House games, which this term included netball and football. The matches were all played in a spirit of friendly competition, with hundreds of students taking part. I would like to thank the PE department for organising all the events that ran every day this week. Please see below for a full set of results.
We have had a fantastic term of sport at Samuel Whitbread with the 1st VII crowned county champions for netball, several outstanding results in rugby and in football the Boys U14, 15 & 16 are all through to the last 32 in the national cup, with the girls U14 and Boys 1st XI through to the last 16 - this has to be our best ever season for football!
Finally, I would like to wish all our students, parents and staff a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Messages From Heads of Year

What an incredible Autumn term! Our Year 9 students have absolutely dazzled us with their enthusiasm and dedication to learning. We have seen an incredible number of students participate in extra-curricular activities this term, including our first SWA panto in two years! It was such a treat to be able to run this again and I know our Year 9s very much enjoyed both taking part and coming to watch.
It has been lovely to see so many students take part in our Whitbread Winter Challenge 2021. I can already tell that I and Mrs Linehan face a difficult task when it comes to deciding the winner! Please do keep encouraging your child to take part. It’s a wonderful opportunity to have some festive fun, with many of the challenges involving quality family time together.
As we start to think ahead to the New Year, please take the time to talk through our new behaviour expectations with your child. We have been really pleased with the fantastic behaviour demonstrated by our Year 9 students so far this academic year and want students to return in January feeling empowered to continue getting it right. Please also check uniform and equipment, ensuring your child is prepared to return fully equipped and ready to learn.
Lastly, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a restful break, from everyone in the Year 9 team.
We have reached the end of Year 10 students’ first term in their GCSE subjects. Overall it is fantastic to see how well so many have adapted and embraced their subjects with enthusiasm. With progress reports sent out last week, it was fantastic to see so many really positive reports. Students worked with form tutors last week to review these and steps needed to improve when we return in January, and there were some very constructive conversations. To help students understand the data in the reports, I went through some frequently answered questions with the students in an online assembly on Friday. I have recorded a parents’ FAQ version of this, which can be viewed here. Hopefully it answers any questions you may have had and allows you to have constructive conversations with your children about their progress.
It was fantastic to see so many of our Year 10s performing leading roles in the pantomime last week and the Christmas concert this week, alongside some excellent fun had in house sports this week. We really want to encourage this positivity outside of lessons, getting involved in clubs and wider school contributions – it helps students engage in learning when in classrooms and gives them a positive attitude towards school, whilst enhancing really important skills around teamwork, determination and ingenuity, three of SWA’s values.
Please can I take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and wish you all a happy and relaxing festive period. It has been a long, challenging term and it is incredibly important to now get some well earned rest, ready to return in January.
As we reach the end of what can only be described as one of the most turbulent years in education I would just like to take the opportunity to wish staff, parents and most importantly the students the warmest thank you. Thank you for coming back to school after a three month lockdown ready to put your all into everything. Thank you for getting involved in sports, competitions and extra-curricular activities to help us all feel a bit more ‘normal’. Thank you for reassuring your teachers that you didn’t forget everything you had been taught previously! And thank you for your smiles, laughter and chatter which filled the deafening silence that we unfortunately got used to when we were working from home. Without you we couldn’t do our job - so thank you for making us your teachers.
I hope you have a restful, warm and loving time over Christmas and we will be ready to see you back in the New Year.
Year 12 and 13, Mr C Tonking and Mrs S Hoad
We finish this term with some real success stories. This we celebrated the fantastic achievements and progress of our Year 12s and 13s in our virtual Christmas assembly. The amount of outstanding results in the last prediction cycle made it difficult for departments to choose just one student for the ‘achievement’ and one for the ‘progress’ awards. We would usually host this assembly in the hall and encourage a celebratory and festive atmosphere, so it is shame we are not able to celebrate in the way we would like.
When we return students in Year 12 will need to submit their placement work experience forms by Friday 28th January. So it is imperative that students are sourcing these. I am running a project in the week of work experience to immerse the Year 10 in the Sixth Form, giving them a taster of what it is like. If any Year 12 would like to help, we are running this as an in house work experience option. These students will need to come and see Mr Tonking to sign up.
Merry Christmas from the Sixth Form team.

'MY SKILL MY LIFE' STEM
Last Thursday, 33 Year 9 girls took part in a ‘My Skills My Life’ STEM workshop run by Catherine Stewart, a Senior Technology & Digital Services Manager for Deloitte LLP. The workshops, although run virtually, were still interactive and inspired girls to consider a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); challenging our perception of the types of people needed by and employed in these industries.
Deloitte is a leading global provider of professional services to businesses, employing over 330,000 in 150 counties. A big thank you to Catherine for the excellent workshop and for her time.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Tuesday saw SWA’s first Christmas concert in two years, and the students were fanatic! The talent that the students displayed was incredible at such a young age, we honestly can’t wait to see what the future holds for such musically gifted students. A huge thank you to the tech crew, they are the glue to the show and they make it that more professional. Lastly, a thank you to all the staff who help out and performed themselves, it was lovely to see teachers playing alongside students.

PANTOMIME
And that’s a wrap! The curtains are now drawn, costumes are hung back up and the set packed away. We can’t describe how proud we are of all the students who took part in the pantomime, from the students on the stage, backstage and orchestra. Also, a massive shout out to all the teachers who put this fantastic piece together and dedicated many hours of their own time. Lastly thank you to all who attended and supported the event, it was lovely having an audience in again after two years.

MODERN LANGUAGE
Year 10 Spanish: Daniel Batchelet is a fantastic linguist who is studying independently for the Spanish GCSE exams this year whilst also keeping up with his French work.
Year 11 Spanish: Clarrie Terleph is extremely determined and conscientious, ensuring that her Spanish work is always of the highest quality, including sophisticated language and vocabulary.
Year 9 Spanish: Holly Wickenden is an aspiring young linguist who is already demonstrating the skills and mind-set necessary to study a language at GCSE. She not only maintains an extremely high standard of work herself but also often helps those around her.
Year 11 French: Isabelle Hoban has amazed her French teacher and others with her dedication in studying French this term. The way she performed in her speaking exam, shows how much she is a great learner and a fantastic linguist!
Year 10 French: Charlotte Bull has impressed her teachers this term with her creativity and ingenuity in class and in assessments. Recently in her speaking assessment she did so well in developing her answers and supporting others in her group. Her work is starting to become more elaborate and complex, excellent progress! Well done!
Year 9 French: Lily Lynn-Mulholland, what a start of the year! Well done for putting 100% of effort and creativity in your French work. You have impressed your teachers and we wish to see you taking French as a GCSE!

U16S NETBALL
SISTERS n SPORT National Netball Knockout Plate - U16 Success
Huge congratulations to our U16 team who won against Beaconsfield High School last Wednesday. After a mismatched scoreline at the end, one showing 31-30 win to SWA and the other showing 33-30 to Beaconsfield it was agreed to play a final 7mins, winner takes all. Georgia King stepped up her dominance in attack, and the U16s took the win, 9-5 and progress to play Sandringham School. Coaches Player of the Match (POM) - Lilly Rutt.
Our U16s then went on to play Sandringham School on Friday. After a close start, Sandringham began to pull away after a lot of little errors by us. The girls fought hard every quarter, but the game ended 54-30.
Oppositions POM - Lydia Noble. Coaches POM - Annabel Howells. Well done on a big week girls

Carly Brinkley was a much loved member of the learning support team and always gave her time for all the children that she supported. She specialised in supporting the social and emotional needs of children and was instrumental in setting up our art therapy and developing other interventions. As a house leader she inspired children to represent their school and raise money for good causes. We wish her well for her future.
Joe Skerman-Gray is unfortunately taking up a new job at Christmas, he is going to be missed by both the department staff and the pupils. He quickly settled in to the SWA and it has been a pleasure to work with him over what has been an extremely demanding time in teaching. His quiet dedication to his pupils and wizardry with computers will be missed.
The Maths Department
Gurmeet Pawar joined us September 2020, in the midst of all those horrible covid restrictions and since then has really made an impact, especially with the extra-curricular opportunities that he has facilitated during his time here. Gurmeet has introduced Robot Rumble; a robot building club in Year 9, an Astronomy GCSE club in Year 10; giving them an opportunity to sit an extra GCSE in Astronomy, and CanSat run by the European Space Agency for Year 12, which is a competition to build a satellite encouraging team work, innovation and using their transferrable skills effectively. He has also been supporting running the physics Olympiad to promote learning physics for all year groups and helped with setting up Computing for Girls which Matt Barber is now running.
Gurmeet leaves us to take up a position in another school, where we hope that he will be really happy. Goodbye and best of luck, or being a physics teacher, probably more appropriately - live long and prosper!
