A Message from Principal, Mr Martin

Year 11 had their final day of lessons on Wednesday, following their English Literature exam in the morning. The day of celebrations was a fitting end for an amazing year group, who have had to cope with three lockdowns, bubbles, facemasks, hand gel and much more. Throughout this time they have shown incredible resilience, courage and determination. They have also been thoughtful, caring and supportive friends to each other, celebrating together during the good times and comforting each other during the hard times. I am incredibly proud of everything they have achieved during the last three years and I wish them all luck in the next stage of their lives, whether it is with us in the Sixth Form, or at college or on an apprenticeship.

Last week, I had the pleasure of watching the key stage 4 Drama Company performance ‘Too much Punch for Judy’. It was a performance tackling an extremely challenging topic, which I couldn't help thinking about all the way home in the car, which is always a good sign of a memorable performance.

Last week, the U18 Boys football were crowned Bedfordshire county champions! This is an incredible achievement, as the cup has been won by Cedars upper school, attached to Luton FC, every year for the last 8 years. This is a testament to how far football has progressed in the last few years at SWA, and along with our multiple cup runs in the national cups this year, shows how football at SWA is growing from strength to strength.

Next month will see two highlights of the academic year, with the Summer Arts Festival and Night at the Musical taking place. These are two of my favourite events and showcase the amazing talent at SWA, including: music, art, drama and dance. Please see how to order your tickets below.

After half term, the Year 9 and 10 food tech trip will be setting off to France to sample the delights of French cuisine, as well as a bit of sightseeing along the way. We also have several Duke of Edinburgh trips going off to various parts of the country and even a trip to Cambridge University organised by Professor Hubbard.

Finally, if you are planning to join Clifton’s Queen’s Jubilee party next weekend, then please take a look at the art display; the SWA and Henlow celebration video; our flower display; the quartet at the Sunday church service or come and find us at the BBQ!

Messages From Heads of Year

Year 9, Miss L Scott

As we reach the end of another half term, I would like to praise our Year 9 students for continuing to show respect to our Year 11 and 13 students as they complete their exams. Year 9 students have been following all our requests to be quiet, avoid certain school areas and to wish student's luck. Thank you, Year 9!

During the second half of summer term, we will begin to welcome the Year 8s from local middle schools who will become part of the Sam Whit family in September. This is a real opportunity for our Year 9 students to be role models, to share their knowledge of the school and to promote the values we hold in our community. Our Year 9 students are an active part of this transition process and we are looking forward to seeing them welcome our new students.

Please take time over the half term to ensure your child is ready to learn for the second half of summer term. All students need to be fully equipped with the list on our website. We recommend that students have spare black pens in particular. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's tutor in the first instance.

Year 9 have been learning all about the role of the monarchy and the Queen's Platinum Jubilee during our extended tutor time this week, so they are fully informed about the celebrations happening across the country this half term! I hope you are all able to spend time with family and loved ones. Wishing you all a lovely half term and extended bank holiday weekend.

ECO COMMITTEE – ECO CODE

This year the eco committee has worked hard to educate, inform and work on practical differences. The committee has formulated there own eco code to help focus on the jobs they work on as a practical differences that everyone can do. They have highlighted the effect the fast fashion industry has on our environment and educated about second-hand fashion which is much better for our climate. As well, they planted 100 trees to help mitigate their carbon footprint.

The committee is currently re-establishing their eco newsletter to help inform and make the school community aware of environmental issues. The team are hoping to achieve our green flag award this year as a celebration of all the work they have since the committee started.

SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL

Next half term, the Summer Arts Festival returns after two years of cancellations. Our music, dance, drama, and art departments are working behind the scenes to make this festival the best it has ever been. Come and join us on 23rd June to see all the wonderful art displays, dances, music and drama performances. Tickets can be bought by clicking here.

NIGHT AT THE MUSICALS

There are still tickets available for the last production of the school year. Come and join us on one of the four evenings, running from 5th till 9th of June. Click here to purchase your tickets.

TOO MUCH PUNCH FOR JUDY

Last week our key stage 4 drama company performed “Too Much Punch for Judy”. The production was fantastic, every student’s performance was outstanding and we were incredibly proud of each and every one of them. A huge thank you to the staff and tech crew for all their work, the play wouldn’t have been what it was without them.

U18 FOOTBALL SUCCESS

Last week our 1st XI team competed in their County Cup Final against reigning champions Cedars Upper School. The boys came out looking strong with Scott M scoring twice within the first 10 minutes of the game. A few minutes later Scott C finished off an amazing move, assisted by Skilling, making the score 3-0 at half term. Cedars wasn’t going down without a fight, in the second half the game they came back 3-1. However Skilling finished off the game with an amazing strike, making the final score 4-1. The boys were crowned county cup champions, and we couldn’t be prouder of them. A huge well done and thank you to the staff Mr J Goldman and Mr R Nicholls, who have spent their own time training and taking the boys up and down the country.

ATTENDANCE INFORMATION – STUDENTS IN YEAR 9, 10 AND 11

We would like to remind parents and carers of the process when reporting a student absent from school / leaving school during the school day.

Absence from morning registration:
Student absence should be reported by telephoning 01462 629900 (option 1) or 01462 628041 before 11am.

Appointments:
Appointments should wherever possible be arranged out of academy hours.  If this cannot be avoided and your child needs to leave for an appointment during the day, please could you provide them with a note.  This will need to be shown to their teacher if they need to leave whilst in a lesson and to reception staff when signing out. If they have a note, there is no additional need to contact us to make us aware.  It is expected that students are only out of school for the actual appointment and should therefore attend school before and/or after, in order to allow minimum disruption to their lessons and attendance.

If you have medical appointment slips / letters that you are happy to share with us, students can hand these in at reception at the time of signing out or a copy can be sent via email amartin@bestacademies.org.uk

Term Dates:
Term dates are published on our website and may differ from those published by Central Bedfordshire.

If you need any further information or have any questions in regards to attendance, please contact the Attendance Office on 01462 628041 or via email, amartin@bestacademies.org.uk

MEDICAL INFORMATION

The school has a first aid trained, medical coordinator who is on hand throughout the school day to administer medical help if a student is unwell, injured or requires medication. If your child has a specific medical need, please ensure the school is informed and has all up to date information.
Here at Samuel Whitbread Academy we like to support resilience in our students, this includes being able to deal with minor aches and pains so that they can continue to enjoy their day.

Keeping Hydrated
It is very important to ensure that we do not dehydrate. As well as keeping our bodies fit and healthy it will also help keep concentration levels higher and therefore improve performance at the school.

Can you please ensure that your child brings a bottle of water with them to school - this can be re-filled at the water fountain. Fizzy drinks and energy drinks are not permitted in school and WILL BE CONFISCATED.

Cups are not available from the medical room and pupils are not permitted to leave lessons to visit the medical room for a drink.

Medicines in School
Prescription medicines MUST be supplied to the Medical Room in a container labelled by the pharmacist.

All other medicines must be provided in their original packaging.

All medicines held and dispensed by the First Aider must have a parent’s/carer’s written consent.

Medication prescribed for 1 / 2 / 3 doses a day should not normally require administration during the school day, unless times are specifically stated by their GP. The medication should generally be taken at the following times:-

1) before school         2) on arrival home from school          3) before bedtime

Asthma Inhalers
Inhalers for the relief of asthma must be immediately available and should be carried in school by pupils who use them. Please ensure the child’s name is on the inhaler. A spare inhaler should be left in the Medical Room in case of emergency.

Paracetamol
Tablets will only be given at break, lunch time and at change of lesson unless the school has been informed the student suffers with migraine or is on the Medical List.

Students are encouraged to carry 2 pain relief tablets - paracetamols / ibuprofen in their bag. Although we do hold supplies of these in school, to supply large numbers of these can be difficult due to the purchase restrictions on these products. If they have their own it means they can take them with the minimum disruption to their day and not have to be waiting in the medical room.

Coping with Hayfever
Please ensure your child takes their medication before they come to school (e.g. antihistamines, eye drops, nasal sprays, etc).

Spare medication may be left in the medical room for emergencies. All medicines held and dispensed by the medical room must be provided in their original packaging and must have a parent / carer's written consent. Please email aeaton@bestacademies.org.uk for a form.

Please ensure that your child has ample supplies of tissues. A little pot of Vaseline is also useful - your child can dab a little under their nose to provide a barrier to the constant irritation from blowing and rubbing.
