A Message from Principal, Mr Martin
Over the last two weeks we have opened our doors to over 400 hundred families from RBA, Henlow and many other schools from across the county, and welcomed them at one of our two Year 8 Open Evenings. The atmosphere at both events was fantastic and families were full of praise for our amazing students and our friendly staff, who clearly love their subjects. The families all commented on our amazing facilities and the incredible range of subjects available at both GCSE and Sixth Form. I was so full of pride listening and observing students as they sold our school with passion.
Last Friday, our staff gathered during break and lunch time to participate in a MacMillan coffee morning. It was a lovely opportunity to socialise with colleagues and donate to a good cause; one that is very close to our hearts. Our fantastic Librarian, Mrs Freeman, kindly crocheted a MacMillan bear that was raffled off. Mr Nolan is now the proud owner of this wonderful teddy bear.
In the world of extra-curricular, the rehearsals for Sleeping Beauty IS in full swing and students are busy learning their lines and the choreography. Ticket sales will be launched shortly, so please watch this space. Last week, saw the Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition, 16 students travelled north to the Peak District and the header image is of the students reaching the top of Mam Tor.
This week is the start of Black History month (BHM) and we have a number of assemblies, events and tutor time activities planned for October. It was a privilege listening to inspirational speaker Ife Thomas this morning as she shared her life story with all our students through an online/live assembly. More can be found out about this inspirational lady here. Our equality and diversity team have been working tirelessly to deliver educational and exciting content for our students. Below, you will find an article about what we are doing as a school for BHM and an article on why we celebrate Black history in October.
Our list of sports fixtures has been relentless this last fortnight with a range of different teams playing across the country. Our U14, U16 and U18 rugby teams travelled to Warwick school on Saturday, where the 1st XV narrowly lost in the final few minutes by only 2 points. However, the 1st XV bounded back this week and won 29-5 against Hartpury College.

Messages From Heads of Year
|
|
Year 9 students have continued to make fantastic impressions on the teaching staff at Samuel Whitbread over the last 2 weeks. It is brilliant to see so many students showing our school values each and every day. It is also great to see and hear that so many Year 9 students are joining the afterschool clubs and attending the extra-curricular activities.
I would like to highlight some updates to our behaviour policy and lesson routines regarding lateness to lessons and homework. If a students is between 1 and 5 minutes late to their lesson they will be issued with an B2 lunchtime detention, if a student is then late to a lesson beyond 5 minutes they will receive a B3 after school detention. To improve punctuality to lessons we would like to remind students to use the 5 minute changeover period to use the toilet, re-fill their water bottles or collect lesson resources from their locker. In regard to homework any student who fails to complete and submit their homework will receive a B3 afterschool detention where they will be required to complete the homework and complete any further homework in that time.
We have the Meet the tutor Evening and Year 9 Options evening in November which will give all parents and guardians the opportunity to discuss your son/daughters progress so far at Samuel Whitbread with their tutor and to discuss with subject department their GCSE courses and suitability for Year 9 students.
As our Year 10 students continue to settle into their GCSE options, please take the time to discuss how your child is finding the content and the increased workload. We know that year 10 brings a higher level of expectation academically and are keen to support as much as we can. If you have any concerns or feedback, please contact your child's tutor in the first instance.
As the weather turns significantly colder, a reminder that students are not permitted to wear hoodies on school site. Students must wear their blazer, they also have the option of wearing a black, non-branded, jumper.
Our Year 10 sports teams have demonstrated fantastic teamwork and dedication this half term! It was a pleasure to watch some of the recent rugby fixtures - not only to see the athletic prowess, but also to witness the incredible team spirit and comradery the teams displayed. A fine example for us all!
Well done, Year 10.
Year 12 students have settled into their first half term with us at Samuel Whitbread. We have been really impressed with their attendance and attitude to learning. Many of them gave up their own time to help at the Year 8 Open Evenings and we are immensely grateful for how well they represented the school.
They all should have selected an enrichment option (sports academy, further maths, EPQ, MOOCs, Teachers for Tomorrow amongst others) and there are other ways to get involved such as peer mentoring and subject ambassadors. Any questions about enrichment can be directed to Mrs Jackman.
Successful bursary application letters should be arriving soon, for payments to arrive in bank accounts during half term. Any queries about bursary can be directed to Miss Collins.
On the 12th October all Sixth Form students will be attending a session during the day about wellbeing and resilience-building, which will hopefully give them some useful skills to help manage their studies and workload.
Our Year 13s have begun their UCAS application process.
So far we have sent three applications, however we are ready for a busy period to have all applications sent off by Christmas. There’s a presentation from the Year 13 Information Evening on the website, should you want to check the application process. An important step is for the students to book their appointments, they can book through Miss Collins. The appointment will be with either myself, Mr Huckle or Mrs Hoad. Students will need to have finished their personal statements and paid for their UCAS. We will then check with the students in the meeting that everything is correct, before it goes to UCAS.
We are also collecting information from the students about their next step. We will look to provide extra support and guidance to students who are considering Apprenticeships and alternative routes to work.
On 12th October, all Sixth Form students will be attending a session in the Theatre with BLOOM, an organisation offering a session on managing workload. We feel this would benefit all students at such a crucial time. Students will be shared a specific session time during registration next week and will need to be prepared with pens and pads as there will be some work to complete.

DRAMA WORKSHOP
On Monday, GCSE and A Level Drama students experienced a workshop based on the play: Metamorphosis.
Students learnt about different practitioner styles of performing, and enjoyed using physical theatre to create characters and atmospheres from the play. They were then treated to an adapted performance of the play, in which they provided sound effects and supporting characters.
It was a great experience to help them with their practical exam work. Thank you, Kat Mary Productions for such an original experience!

MATHS SUPPORT SESSIONS
The Maths Department are currently running support sessions every Tuesday and Thursday after school, in room 316 from 3:00pm – 4:15pm.
There will be Maths teachers available to help with topics that students need to work on. Students may have identified these topics from their homework, from lessons or from their own revision. Or, it may just be they need support with completing their homework. Chromebooks are available to use to access the online platforms used by the department. All students are free to drop in as long as they have not been requested to attend any other after-school sessions.
We would also like to encourage students to revise at home, so would like to take this opportunity to highlight the websites available for support. Year 11 students have access to a website called Maths Kitchen, every student should have registered for an account as homework for Year 11 is being set on Maths Kitchen fortnightly. All year groups have access to the Dr Frost website for their homework which has videos to support learning.
In addition to the two websites mentioned, students can also get free access to the two sites below:
MathsGenie: Contains videos, worksheets GCSE questions and worked solutions.
Corbett Maths: Contains videos on every topic, worksheets and worked solutions.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact either of us, Mr Togher or Mr Leverett.

ENRICHMENT FAIR
Last Monday, 150 students attended the Year 12 Enrichment Fair. Here they had the opportunity to sign up to their chosen enrichment programme for the year. They had a choice from MOOC’s, Gold, Debate Club, the Society and voluntary work at Wrest Park.
All students undertake an enrichment in Year 12 to support their study skills and give their application a boost for University, Apprenticeships and jobs. Enrichment allows them to focus on something outside their academic studies.

MRS RICHARDS HAS RAN THE LONDON MARATHON
Last weekend the fantastic Mrs Richards ran the London Marathon and she would just like to say…
“A huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported me, sponsored me and wished me good luck for The London Marathon last Sunday. I am thrilled to say that I completed it, and even more pleased to say that I have raised £1463 for St John's Hospice in Moggerhanger. I really could not have done this without the support of Samuel Whitbread and the local community.” - Mrs Richard

When we think of Black History month in Britain it is still very common for us to celebrate the works of famous Black American Civil Rights activists like Martin Luther King, and Rosa Parks. However, what we now need to focus on is the massive influence that Black people, activists and members of ou...

FOOTBALL ACADEMY
It has been an exciting start to the season for our Football Academy players, having already played 17 matches across both sides since the start of August. This season we are involved in not only our school and college competitions but are also representing Shefford Town & Campton FC in the U18 Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League on a Thursday evening. This is providing our students with a clear pathway into senior football whilst also enabling our students to experience high quality football under floodlights each and every week. So far our side sits top of the league having lost just one match so far, and have made a great start to their first season at this level.
Away from the Sixth Form programme, our younger year groups are already into the thick of things with county and national competitions for both boys and girls teams. So far it’s been the B teams at U15 and U16 level who have successfully negotiated their first round ties, with our A teams taking to the field for boys and girls over the coming days. We have had great numbers to training sessions afterschool which is fantastic to see and helps us to put out hugely competitive sides at all levels. With A&B teams competing in the national cup at all age groups plus additional fixtures for players who are missing out on either of those teams, there will be lots of opportunities to represent the academy over the academic year.
If you have any questions about the Football provision on offer at Samuel Whitbread Academy, please feel free to contact Mr Goldman to discuss further.
