A Message from Principal, Mr Martin
This term has gone by incredibly quickly and has even finished with two inches of snow. We have achieved an enormous amount and are looking forward to the end of term break.
This week has been full of surprises, starting with the unexpected snowfall on Sunday evening, followed by the heating deciding to give up on Tuesday morning. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the site agents who worked relentlessly to get the site safe and for working all day Tuesday to ensure we could open for the remainder of the week. The students have responded maturely and have really enjoyed the snow on our main field.
This week our Sixth Form World Food Festival took place in the hall and our Student Christmas Fair ran in the activity studio. Overall the students raised £535.65 for the local food bank and for our sister school in Ghana, which I'm sure will be a welcome Christmas present for them all, as well as providing a wonderful opportunity for our students to demonstrate their empathy for people less fortunate than us (please see below for more information and pictures of the event). Finally, we managed to make 142 shoe boxes for the Rotary Club Shoebox Appeal, which will be sent to children in Europe, so they have something to open on Christmas day.
The PE department have been busy raising funds for their tour of South Africa in the summer. Over the course of 26 hours they each completed a marathon by running a mile every hour, grabbing sleep between each run, and in temperatures of minus 5 degrees overnight. I would like to thank Biggleswade Rugby Club for their support and for hosting the runners overnight. So far they have raised over £10k. The money will go towards kit and equipment for the tour and be donated to the township that they will visit in Cape town. To donate to the fund, please click on the link below.
Last week, our Christmas pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, ran Tuesday -Friday, proving to be incredibly popular! It showcased the music, drama, art and dance departments and our students made us very proud. The cast included students from our feeder middle and lower schools, with the youngest pupils only seven years old, performing alongside our students, some of whom are 18 years old and applying to university. This is a great example of how our Trust (Bedfordshire School Trust) provides opportunities to collaborate and learn from each other.
In sport, we have had several highlights this term, with the 1st VII netball team beating BGS and St Josephs in the same week and the 1st XV rugby team securing a place in the semi-finals of the National Vase. The U15 are currently on course to join them and will play against St Albans in the new year.
