A Message from Principal, Mr Martin
We have had a fantastic start to the second half of the Autumn term with a number of highlights already this term.
Following our two very successful Year 8 Open Evenings last half term, I am looking forward to welcoming prospective Y12s at our Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday 16th November. The event will run simultaneously with our Y11 Tutor Evening and our Careers Fair which is open to all years. Please come and visit local businesses and further education providers and support this event. It is a great opportunity to discuss possible career pathways.
I am delighted to announce that we have agreed to become a collection point for the food banks run by the Preen Community Interest company in Biggleswade and the Need Project, Baptist Church in Shefford. If you would like to donate to either of these two charities, then please click on the links to their websites to see the list of items that they will accept and then bring anything you want to donate to reception. Also, The Rotary Club appeal was a great success again this year with 48 shoe boxes delivered today and a further 50 expected to be completed by next Friday. We continue to support this great cause so children, less fortunate than us, can open these on Christmas Day. This is a fantastic appeal and one that we have supported every year for several years now.
Finally, we are pleased to say that the joint Remembrance Day, with pupils RBA and Shefford Lower and over 3000 pupils, has now become an annual event following a very successful online service during lockdown in 2020. Poems were read by pupils from RBA and Shefford Lower School, as well as a duologue from Journeys End performed by GCSE Drama students from Whitbread.

REMEMBRANCE POEMS
Our Year 9 students were tasked with writing a poem for Remembrance Day during their recent Engaging Minds lesson. Our staff had the tough decision to select the top three poems. They were super impressed with the quality, volume and effort from the year group. A huge well done to Isabelle A (9A) who won the overall competition, and runner up Daniel J (9P).

Messages From Heads of Year
|
|
Year 9 students have now returned to Samuel Whitbread Academy following their half term break and I am pleased to report the large majority are demonstrating the school values in lessons, around school and how they are interacting with other students and staff.
The praise points accrued across the year before half term were outstanding with a number of Year 9 students coming top across the whole school. The Praise cycle has now started again and we will be rewarding top student, top tutor group and issuing extended break and pizza passes. We will also be selecting those students who have consistently achieved the highest praise for a rewards trip at the end of term.
Whilst we have seen improvements in the standard of uniform we continue to expect the uniform to be smart and fall in line with our uniform policy and we ask for your support with this. We believe that both behaviour and uniform contribute to a positive school community and we will continue to have high expectations throughout the Year. Whilst students are evidencing that they have a better understanding of the behaviour policy we still set high expectations and expect positive behaviour around the school and within the community.
Please let the year team know of any successes your children have outside of school as we like to celebrate these as well as those successes achieved within school.
As we prepare for the upcoming mocks, our year 11 students have been working hard in lessons to develop their exam techniques and focus on specific topic areas. Hopefully all students are implementing some of the strategies that we have discussed during form time. We have emphasised the importance of creating a timetable and the ‘Adapt’ app is great at supporting students in doing this (other apps are available). By having a timetable, it ensures that revision is focussed and promotes motivation. It also generates a sense of achievement when the specific topic can be ‘ticked off’.
Although students are aware of the importance of the mock examinations, staff are also keen to remind them that the process is in place for them to learn from and develop their experience in dealing with stressful situations. There is no getting around that exams create a sense of anxiety and can be stressful (this is normal), but by completing them, we are able to increase our resilience and prepare for future situations.
We are looking forward to welcoming you to our Sixth Form Open Evening. Here you are able to see the various options that are available to your son / daughter post 16. This will take place on Thursday 16th November.
We have an excellent team of form tutors who will be working with your son / daughter on a daily basis, ensuring that they feel prepared and that they have a range of coping strategies in preparation for the mock period. Please do contact the form tutor or the year team if you do have any questions regarding the mock exams.
Please continue to ensure that you all promote balance during this period – of course revision is important and it is an essential part of the mock exam process, but please continue to ensure your son / daughter has the opportunity to spend time with the family, spend time with friends, take part in their hobbies and have the opportunity to switch off from work.
As we settle into this half term we are all feeling the pressures of upcoming IPEs later this term, and for many of our students, external exams in January. Many of our students also have university and apprenticeship interviews to prep for. It is possibly the busiest and most demanding few months that our students will experience. We share plenty of resources on their google classroom to support them with next steps as well as subject resources. If there are any concerns or worries about next steps please do contact the form tutor initially – we can also assist in setting up independent careers advice on site. We do understand that preparing to leave home can be both socially and financially concerning for many – and we will be supporting students next term with understanding finances and budgeting. We look forward to celebrating their achievements later this term, including supporting the school with sixth form open evening and participation in our fund-raising food festival.

LITERACY FESTIVAL
We are delighted to celebrate the success of SWA’s first Literary Festival. The festival was marked by various enriching activities and events involving the entire school community. The Mayor of Shefford joined us at the beginning of the week for our grand opening of the newly refurbished Learning Resource Centre. Highlights also included an inspiring author visit by Elizabeth Okoh who collaborated closely with a group of Year 9 and Year 10 students, fostering a love for literature, and providing invaluable insights into the world of writing.
To kick off the festival with a spooky twist, Year 9 students enjoyed the chance to ‘Drop Everything and Read’ at the beginning of each lesson immersing themselves in a Halloween-inspired short story. David’s Bookshop visited later in the week offering all our staff and students access to a diverse selection of books.
Finally, our Literary Festival paid tribute to Black History Month’s 2023 theme of ‘Saluting our Sisters’ with a thought-provoking Poetry and Art workshop, encouraging students in Year 9, 10 and 12 to express their creativity whilst honouring the remarkable contributions of black women throughout history.

NETBALL
We are through to Regionals! The Netball Academy have had a fantastic start to their season, seeing success in all their competitions. Our 1st VII are through to Regionals in January after having a successful day at the U19 County Tournament, winning/drawing all of their pool games but just falling short to Redborne to take that County Champs spot. They hosted Hills Road in a top of the table clash in our AOC East Region League last week. Sitting at the top of the table, Whitbread beat Hills Road 55-45 in an intense and physical battle. Our 2nd VII has had amazing successes in their AOC East Midlands League, beating North Herts College 48-5 in their first game of the season - what a score! Their National Bowl journey continues in the forthcoming weeks, hosting St Jo's in the 2nd round after having a tough first game against Berkhamsted's 2nd team, missing out of the shield draw by 2 points! The girls are training extremely hard and so excited for the rest of the season.
