A Message from Principal, Mr Martin
The start to the new school year has gone incredibly well and the new Year 12 and Year 9 students have made a great start to their time at Samuel Whitbread.
The Year 9 students have settled in well and have quickly got used to their new timetables, the layout of the school and all their different teachers. They have also got used to the new mobile phone pouches, which have proved extremely successful and have all but eliminated interruptions to learning in lessons from students’ phones. The new policy in Year 9 has also had a big impact on Years 10 and 11, with very few students being ‘pouched’ in the first few weeks.
It was great to see many of our students at two awards evenings at the start of term. The various awards included individual subject awards as well as awards for community involvement, overcoming adversity and the house cup. They were presented by staff and local dignitaries, including the Mayor of Shefford, the High Sheriff, the MD of Aco Technologies PLC, the Vice Dean of Bedfordshire University, Charles Whitbread and members of the governing body. There was a great deal to celebrate this summer, with the GCSE results being the highest in the local authority, with over 70% of students achieving a grade 4 in English and Maths, and over 50% gaining a grade 5 in English and Maths. At key stage 5, the results were equally impressive with over 30% of the grades A*-A or equivalent, 63% A*-B or equivalent and 83% A*-C or equivalent, which were the joint highest in the local authority.
Finally, Aaron in Year 13 has written a letter to the school thanking everyone for all their support in raising over £21,000 for his treatment in Germany. We have included excerpts of the letter below, along with photos from all the fundraising events last term.
Thank you to everyone for your ongoing determination and excellence at the start of this term.

A Thank-you Letter from Aaron to the community
"I would like to thank everyone who has supported me and my family during this challenging time. I would especially like to thank Mr Hart and Shaun Fawcett Ampthill (RFU) for setting up the incredible charity match. I am glad I made it to the match.
I would also like to thank the amazing student leadership team for their continued support in fundraising activities such as the bake sale and BBQ. I also would like to thank you for facilitating such activities in order to raise funds to support my treatment. The support and love we received from everyone has been really overwhelming.
I am extremely grateful to Mr Hart and Mr Sinclair, Mrs Hoad for visiting me at home. There are so many people that I would like to thank but unable to reach out to everyone. I would like to extend our gratitude to all the teachers, students and parents."

Messages From Heads of Year
|
|
We are delighted to share that our Year 9 students have made an excellent start to the year at Samuel Whitbread Academy. The level of engagement in lessons has been outstanding, and students have shown a real commitment to both their academic progress and personal development. It's particularly pleasing to note the fantastic attendance at clubs and extracurricular activities, where students are embracing every opportunity to get involved.
Our Year 9 cohort has already accumulated an impressive 4,000 praise points, a testament to their hard work, positive attitude, and commitment to living out our school values every day. Whether it’s through kindness, respect, or responsibility, these students are showing us what it means to be true ambassadors of our school.
Teachers have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the students, and it's clear that positive relationships are forming across the year group. The atmosphere around the school is incredibly encouraging, and it’s been great to see such a positive environment develop in and out of the classroom.
We would also like to take this opportunity to remind students that if they ever encounter any issues, the first port of call should always be their form tutor. Additionally, the Year 9 team is always here to offer support and guidance when needed.
It has been a pleasure to see how the Year 9 students have responded to the new phone pouch system. It is great to see the students socialise and talk to one another during social times. Thank you for your support at home in this too. It really is a partnership and we appreciate your support.
Finally, it has been particularly pleasing to see the resilience so many of our students have displayed. Both in their lessons and in extracurricular activities, they’ve shown a great deal of perseverance, which will no doubt serve them well throughout the year.
We look forward to continuing this fantastic journey with Year 9 and celebrating even more of their successes as the year progresses.

As we settle into the new school year, I wanted to take a moment to share how well our students have returned to school and adjusted to their routines. It’s been an exciting and positive start! If your child is considering adjusting their subject choices, please ensure any changes are submitted to the Year Team by Friday 4th October. After this date, no further adjustments will be possible.
Polite reminder regarding mobile phones
Year 10 students are not allowed to have their mobile phones out in class or inside the buildings, if a student wishes to use their phone they can do so outside during break and lunch. Students who are seen using their mobile phones in class will be sanctioned accordingly.

To make a first impression, is to decide how we wish to be perceived. To make a second impression, takes time in understanding who we are. To come back for a third year, with such a wonderful attitude to learning, engagement with everything extra-curricular, and a determination to succeed? THAT is why I am so proud to be Head of Year 11.
This year is short and important, but it is clear already that Year 11 are up to the challenge, and making all the right decisions. Please continue this hard work as our afterschool-opportunities open up, and the winter sets in. The days may be getting shorter, but the success you are seeing will only continue to grow. Keep at it Year 11!

Year 12 has had a fantastic start and everyone has settled into their subject choices and getting to know their form tutors. They are also learning how to use the ‘free’ periods on their timetable for study and getting used to having greater independence. With that greater independence comes great responsibility and students are working on study and planning skills in registration time with tutors.
The transition between Year 11 and Year 12 is one of the biggest changes in education – many of our students find it more challenging than the change from sixth form to university – and it is vital that they start their Year 12 experience well organised and well resourced. Those students studying BTECs may already have had some first submission deadlines for assessed coursework – so good use of study time is vital. If you were unable to attend the Year 12 Information Evening on the 12th September the presentation was sent out, so please do have a read through to see how you can support your son/daughter at home. By the time you read this newsletter all students should have received their lanyards and ID cards, and really feel like Sixth Formers at SWA.

Awards Evening 2024
The beginning of the new school year always brings a flurry of activity and excitement. We came together for two evenings to recognise and celebrate the exceptional students from last year's Year 11 and Year 13 cohorts. We extend our gratitude to all the parents/carers, staff, guest speakers and students for making these evenings truly exceptional as we celebrate and acknowledge the remarkable talent within our SWA Community.

Student Summer Success
During the school holidays, Bailey Staniforth had the incredible opportunity to represent Bedfordshire county in the national junior under 25’s pairs at the Aviva National finals in Leamington Spa, alongside his lawn bowls partner, Owen Harker. Their journey in the competition was remarkable as they advanced to the round of the last 32. Although they didn't progress to the later stages, the experience was invaluable for Bailey. It has inspired him to continue working hard and representing Bedfordshire again in the future.

Alice in Wonderland Pantomime
The performing arts department is delighted to announce that this year's Christmas pantomime will be "Alice in Wonderland"! Auditions took place last week, and the cast and crew began rehearsals this Thursday and they are already sounding fantastic. Additionally, younger students from the BEST Trust schools will be coming along to their first rehearsal on Monday 30th September, and we are so pleased to have them join us again this year!
Full details on show dates and tickets will be available soon. To keep up to date with the department, make sure you follow their Instagram - @samwhitperformingarts.
We are beyond excited to see the magic that the Performing Arts Department will create with this production. This is one rabbit hole we don't mind falling down!

Open Evening 2024
We are excited to share the great success of our recent Open Evening. It was fantastic to see so many parents and carers of potential students exploring our school and interacting with our staff and students. The event offered a wonderful opportunity for visitors to tour each department, meet our skilled teachers, and learn about the wide range of academic and extracurricular activities we offer. The positive feedback we received reinforces our dedication to providing an exceptional educational experience, and we are eager to welcome many of the attendees as part of our school community in the future.

Extra-Curricular Sport at Whitbread
Welcome back to everyone, our sports calendar is already in full flow. We have a whole host of fixtures in the diary for this term and many more will be added over the course of the year. Throughout the year we will communicate regarding fixtures via team sheets and on our new school sport website - https://sport.samuelwhitbread.org.uk.
This can also be accessed through our school website under the “sport” tab on the homepage. Here you will be able to view the fixtures for the week ahead, extra-curricular timetable and team sheets for all sports at the academy. The school sport website also has the capacity to synchronise a team's fixtures to your own calendar which will then enable parents/carers to see exactly what matches are scheduled at the click of a button. If you wish to view the team sheets for each individual fixture you will need to login using the password Whitbread.
In addition to our sports website, we are also extremely active on social media platforms. Please follow us on X, formerly Twitter (@SamWhitPE) and Instagram (samwhita_pe), to be kept up to date with results, pictures and announcements regarding all of our extracurricular sports at Samuel Whitbread Academy.
