A Message from Principal, Mr Martin
As we approach the festive season, it’s wonderful to reflect on the many achievements of our students and the vibrant events that have taken place over the past month.
One of the highlights of this term was our fantastic Christmas pantomime, Alice in Wonderland. What an extraordinary performance it was! The cast and crew truly dazzled, and the evening was met with a well-deserved standing ovation. It was heart-warming to see our students shine in such a creative and collaborative effort, bringing this magical story to life in the most wonderful way.
Another unforgettable event was our Performing Arts Evening. This spectacular showcase of talent included everything from drama and dance to our incredible choirs, orchestra, and two fantastic bands. The evening demonstrated the depth and diversity of our student’s creativity, and we are so proud of every performer.
In sports news, our U19 Netball team secured an impressive victory against Bedford Girls School, earning themselves a place in the regional competition alongside the U14 team in the New Year. What an incredible achievement! We also saw brilliant performances in basketball and football, with wins in the National Cups for our U15, U16, and U18 teams at all age groups. Our rugby teams have been in great form too, with wins against strong opposition, including Norwich School.
And finally, I am absolutely delighted to be able to announce to you that Mrs Linehan has been appointed as the new Principal of Pix Brook Academy. Mrs Linehan has been Vice Principal at SWA for five years and started working at the school straight after Covid hit the UK - which was a blessing for us, as she led on all aspects of communication during that difficult time. She has had a big impact on the school, not least her work on improving teaching & learning and working with the High Attainers. She will be sorely missed at the academy, but I couldn’t be prouder of her as she embarks on this new journey.
As we close for the Christmas season, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our students, staff, and parents & carers for their hard work, support, and dedication. It has been a truly memorable term, and we hope you have a restful and joyful Christmas break.
We look forward to welcoming you all back in the New Year for another exciting term ahead.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Year 9, Mr Nicholl
As we approach the end of the year, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on what has been a truly fantastic term for Year 9. Our students have made a remarkable transition into their new environment, showing tremendous growth socially, academically, and personally. Their character and values have shone through, and it has been a privilege to witness their development.
Throughout the term, students have actively engaged with our PSHE and values themes. They have contributed meaningfully to discussions and activities around careers, options choices, lifestyle choices, and positive behaviours. We have challenged them to live out our school values daily, and it has been inspiring to see the vast majority rise to that challenge with enthusiasm and determination.
Our students have also excelled beyond the classroom. We are incredibly proud of their sporting achievements, musical performances, production showcases, and participation in a wide range of extracurricular activities. Each event has highlighted the wealth of talent and dedication within our year group.
One of the key milestones this term was our Options Evening, which was a great success. It provided students and parents with valuable insights into the various option choices available. We are committed to supporting students as they consider their next steps, and teachers will continue to guide them in making informed decisions as we head into the new year.
This term also saw us host an exciting STEM workshop for our Year 9 girls. The workshop provided an incredible opportunity for students to explore new concepts, engage in problem-solving, and broaden their understanding of future pathways in STEM. It was clear that the experience had a lasting impact, encouraging many of our students to think big and aim high.
In the lead-up to Christmas, form time has been filled with the festive spirit as students and teachers embraced our ‘12 Days of Christmas’ activities. From creative challenges to team-building tasks, it’s been wonderful to see the spirit of collaboration, teamwork, and creativity on display each day. These moments have truly captured the essence of the season and strengthened our school community.
As we say goodbye to 2024 and look forward to 2025, it’s a perfect time to reflect on our goals and look ahead to new beginnings. The new year offers a fresh start for students to set their sights on new achievements, build on their progress, and continue striving for excellence. We encourage all students to take this time to rest, recharge, and return in January ready to make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead.
On behalf of the Year 9 team, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for your ongoing support throughout this term. Your encouragement and partnership are invaluable as we work together to support our students’ growth and success.
Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and a joyful New Year. We look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for an exciting 2025.
I'd like to take a moment to reflect on the fantastic efforts and achievements of our Year 10 students this term. The first term has marked an important stage in their education, as they have embraced the challenges of their chosen GCSE subjects and worked hard to adapt to the demands of their studies. It has been amazing to see how well our Year 10 students have settled into their chosen subjects. Many have made significant steps in developing their understanding and have shown a great level of maturity and resilience.
I would like to thank you, their parents and guardians, for the support you provide at home. Your encouragement plays an important part in helping our students navigate this stage of their life.
As we break for the Christmas Holidays, I would like to encourage all students to take time to rest and recharge.
Wishing you and your families a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year.
We want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible efforts of our Year 11 students. Over the past term, you’ve shown resilience and determination during your mock exams – a true testament to your hard work and preparation for the months ahead - and begun your journey towards your Post-16 pathways with wonderful events and careers meetings.
Outside the classroom, you’ve excelled on the pitch, with outstanding performances in football, rugby, and netball, showcasing teamwork and school spirit throughout. What’s even more impressive is the significant improvement in achievement points across the year group, reflecting your growing focus and commitment to success.
Well done, Year 11 – we are so proud of everything you’ve accomplished this term. Wishing you all a restful and well-deserved Christmas break!
We have had a very busy time in the lead-up to Christmas. The IPE window was successful, and the students handled this period exceptionally well. They should have received their results by now and can use this to inform their revision before the summer exams. We have now sent over 100 UCAS applications, with more booked in for January. Just a gentle reminder that we also have a careers team for students to book careers appointments through, and Miss Hopkins is available to discuss Degree Apprenticeships.
We hope the students and parents & carers have a restful Christmas, and we look forward to seeing them in January.

Performing Arts Showcase & Winter Pantomime
We are thrilled to share the highlights of our winter Performing Arts shows, which have brought immense joy and excitement to our school community this December. The month kicked off with the outstanding Performing Arts Christmas Showcase, which broke records by completely selling out for the first time! Attendees were treated to a variety of performances, including stunning dance routines and captivating scenes from "DNA" and "Top Girls." Our talented school choir filled the air with festive cheer alongside our incredible school bands, Retroplay and New Gen. Heartfelt congratulations to all the performers and our dedicated student tech crew — this was truly a show to remember!
Following the Christmas Showcase, we enjoyed an enchanting four-night run of our winter pantomime, "Alice in Wonderland." This imaginative production had the audience engaged from start to finish, cheering and jeering along with the cast. It was delightful to see so many younger students from other schools within the trust participating in the magic, and we sincerely appreciate their hard work. The commitment and talent of every performer ensured that this show was a resounding success.
A special congratulations and thanks go to Year 10 student Ollie M, who rose to the occasion on the final night by executing an impressive impromptu stand-up routine as Tweedle Dum after his partner, Tweedle Dee, fell ill. Ollie demonstrated remarkable perseverance and showmanship by adapting his scenes.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the entire community for your unwavering support of our Performing Arts shows this term. We eagerly anticipate bringing you more incredible performances in the new year!

SWA Choir Shines at Community Events
On Sunday, December 15th, our outstanding school choir had the wonderful opportunity to participate in “Carols4Christmas” at All Saints Church in Clifton. The choir performed "O Holy Night" with incredible grace and harmonised beautifully.
The next day, on Monday, December 16th, the choir brought joy to the residents of Oak Manor Care Home by singing festive carols. This heart-warming experience was truly special for our students & the residents, and we are sure it created memories they will treasure forever. Residents shared their appreciation for the performance, with many reminiscing about past moments spent singing hymns and carols with loved ones. The SWA Choir is excited to continue their visits to Oak Manor, with plans to return at Easter for more musical performances.

Ceramics Class
Our Year 10 art students are currently immersed in an exciting 10-hour ceramics project centered around this year's theme of "Cultures." Recently, they embarked on enriching visits to the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, where they gathered valuable research on the subject.
Following these visits, the students engaged in artist research, delving into the techniques, inspirations, and construction methods of various ceramic artists. This exploration has fuelled their creativity, allowing them to develop their unique designs which they are now in the process of constructing. Once completed, these impressive pieces will undergo firing and glazing. We look forward to sharing their creations with you soon!

Christmas Tree Project
Congratulations to the 10D Engineering class for being the first class ever to complete their Christmas Tree project in time for Christmas! It was a pleasure teaching and working with them. All the other Year 10 classes (10E, 10F, 10J, and 10L) have also worked extremely hard to complete their Christmas trees. While some projects are not fully functional yet, we haven’t given up!

Sixth Form Football
The senior football team successfully negotiated their way into both the schools' FA National Cup last 16 and the Colleges National Cup last 16. A 7-2 victory over Thorpe St Andrews saw the lads through to the ESFA schools competition, whilst a 2-0 victory a week earlier against F2 Academy got the boys through to the next round in the AOC colleges trophy.
In the AOC Premier League, the boys have been placed in an extremely tough group that includes Hartpury College and South Gloucestershire College, two highly reputable football programmes. After some close results, the boys finally took their first win at Cat 1 level of the AOC league with a 3-1 victory over Pro: Direct Northampton. A resilient and mature performance saw the boys take the 3 points and bring them back into contention for a mid-placed table finish after a couple of draws previously in the league.
Our 2nd XI continue to progress well and are currently placed third in the AOC championship (Cat 2 level). A previously unbeaten start was tarnished with a loss away to East Suffolk College. However, the boys are also into the last 16 of the ESFA B National Cup and will be hoping to reach the Quarter Finals this week with a victory against Northampton School for Boys.

Enjoy a well-deserved Christmas, boys!

The Science Department has an exciting term planned! In March, we will host a British Science Week Fair, and we are working hard to make it a success. This year's theme for British Science Week is "Change and Adapt." Mr. Tate will be running an egg-hatching project and breeding stick insects in his classroom as part of this theme.
We encourage as many students as possible to get involved in our various projects. Below are the opportunities available for different year groups:
Year 9 - CREST Award and STEM Innovators Club
Every Thursday after school from 3-4 pm, starting in January, engaged Science students are invited to join this weekly activity. There are two options available for students:
1. CREST Award: This award can be a valuable addition to students' CVs and is also beneficial for those looking to complete the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Skill section. For more information, click here: https://www.crestawards.org/crest-bronze.
2. STEM Innovator: Students will work on designing a product they wish to bring to market, culminating in a Dragon's Den presentation in July.
Year 9 and 10 - Level 2 Environmental Leadership Qualification
Every Thursday after school from 3-4 PM, starting in January, we will select 8 to 10 students to participate in this qualification. SWA is now a ‘trailblazer’ school for this program, running from January to July.
For further details about the qualification and its requirements, please click here.
Year 9, 10, and 11 - CREST Award for the British Science Week Fair
Students in these year groups who want to work on their own project to earn a CREST Award can sign up to complete their projects at home. They will present their work at the school Science Fair. For more information, click here.
If you believe your child would be interested in any of these opportunities or if you would like more information, please email us at rord@bestacademies.org.uk.
